Description

NGC6559 is a HII region in the constellation of Sagittarius, adjacent to the famous 'Lagoon Nebula'. This image is my take on this well visited and imaged object and is comprised of data taken through Ha, Red, Green and Blue filters using my QSI683 camera and Takahashi TSA120 OTA. This busy star forming region is located approximately 5,000 years from Earth and is comprised of red emission nebula and a number of blue reflection nebula.

I'm drawn to the myriad of shapes and contrasting colours evident within the emission and reflection nebula which also show hints of SII and OIII gas that is lurking within. The shape of the nebula is indicative of a human foot with a few toes sticking out at funny angles. No doubt others will see many different shapes as we scan across the field. The dark dust lanes of the Milky Way surrounding the object make for a nice contrast too and provide a frame for the area surrounding the nebulosity that we can see.
